Older people in the United States were not significantly affected by the Novel H1N1 strain, because they had been exposed to a similar form of the virus when young and acquired life-long immunity. We are seeing that life-long immunity does not seem to develop post vaccination. A concern will be, will all those who were vaccinated against H1N1 as children now be in risk of a similar virus when they are elderly and more vulnerable?

Also, was there any research done on the level of Vitamin D in those children who were severely affected by this flu? Was the difference between those who had severe disease and those who had mild disease related to Vitamin D? We know that Vitamin D levels are low in a large number of children in the USA. Is perhaps the lower rate of severe disease in Africa related to sun exposure and resultant Vitamin D levels?

Will WHO and the health care systems of the world broaden their thought processes to include other disease prevention/ health optimizing methods besides vaccines?
