PandemicPrep.Org in cooperation with its manufacturing and distribution partners is pleased to offer this Antiviral Protection Program. It is a unique program offered to businesses of any size with no minimum purchase requirement.
The World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert level from four to five, meaning that all countries should immediately activate their pandemic preparedness plans, and remain on high alert for unusual outbreaks. The economic impact of a pandemic is likely to far exceed the impact of any recent catastrophic event. Given that a pandemic vaccine is not available, antiviral medications will be the first line of defense in a pandemic.
The United States government does maintain a supply of antiviral medications in the Strategic National Stockpile. However, there currently is a supply of antiviral medications sufficient only to treat those individuals who are expected to become sickened by a pandemic influenza strain. This projection assumes that current dosing guidelines remain unchanged. There is no medication reserved by the federal government for prophylaxis (prevention of disease.)
The purpose of this Pandemic Antiviral Protection Program is to help employers protect their investment in personnel, mitigate the impact of a pandemic and maintain business continuity. The benefits of this program are:
- Dedicated inventory stockpiled for your employees.
- In recognition of the declaration of Phase V by the World Health Organization, distributions from our supply will be made immediately upon your acceptance into the program.
- Cost-effectiveness through the aggregation of regional businesses.
- Stockpile protects your company and employees from potential opportunistic pricing practices associated with a pandemic declaration.
- Minimal cost per employee based upon employer election of preferred distribution model.
- Flexible plan design
- This program accommodates most employer groups including the smallest local, independent firms that have previously not had access to antiviral stockpiling programs.
- You decide how many employees to cover, how many courses per employee and whether their families will be included.
- Flexibility to choose the distribution model best suited to your company needs.
- Mailed directly to employee’s homes
- Distributed at company-sponsored clinics
- Increases the confidence employees have in your company by preparing for a pandemic and showing concern for their wellbeing.
- andemicPrep.Org currently has access to a limited number of treatment courses of Tamiflu (oseltamivir). Each treatment course consists of ten (10) 75mg capsules. Tamiflu, along with Relenza (zanamivir), are the only antiviral medications currently authorized for the prophylaxis and treatment of swine flu.
The FDA has issued an Emergency Use Authorizations (EUA) for antiviral medications. More information regarding the EUA is available at www.cdc.gov/swineflu/eua/. The EUA allows the expanded use of antiviral medications without the usual labeling requirements, the use in children younger than one year of age and the use of medication that has its expiration date extended. In addition, the FDA has authorized the use of antiviral medications for the prophylaxis of swine influenza after close contact with an infected individual. Current FDA dosage guidelines for the treatment of swine influenza in adults are two capsules per day for 5 days (one treatment course). For prophylaxis in adults, the recommendation is one capsule per day for a minimum of ten days. Antiviral medications provide protection only while they are in your system. Essentially, once you stop taking the medication, you will cease having any protection from the influenza virus.
When designing an antiviral component of your pandemic plan, you first need to decide what your objectives are. Some questions to consider:
- Do you want to cover all employees or just key staff?
- Do you wish to cover just employees or will you cover their families as well?
- Do you wish to provide medication for an entire pandemic wave of six to eight weeks or do you want just enough to treat employees who may have come into contact with an infected individual?
No recommendations can be given regarding how many treatment courses to order per individual because so many variables are present. Anecdotally, corporations who have instituted private stockpiles have typically ordered between one and three treatment courses per covered individual. Each company will need to determine its own antiviral medication needs based on the likelihood of exposure and the amount of risk that the company is able to accept.
Distribution Options and Cost:
Option One (Direct to Employees)
How to Reserve Tamiflu
To reserve Tamiflu for your company, you must send an e-mail to Info@PandemicPrep.Org [mailto:Info@PandemicPrep.Org] with the company name, complete address, number of employees to be covered, total courses to be purchased, whether you want Option 1 or 2, Contact name, phone number and e-mail address. Do not delay, as we do not expect this supply to last very long. It is first come, first served. If we get more orders than we have availability, we will try to get more product from Roche, but they cannot guarantee more product will become available.
You will provide our distribution partner (Foundation Care) with a list of enrollees, names of enrollee’s physicians, and the number of treatment courses you wish to order per enrollee. You will incur a $9.00 fee per enrollee. This fee will cover the administrative costs of enrollment into the program verification of eligibility, and adjudication of any insurance claims. Enrollees will be responsible for contacting their physician and presenting the pre-printed prescription for the physician’s signature. The physician will then fax the completed form to the distribution partner. Upon distribution, you will be charged the wholesale acquisition cost, plus $10.00 per treatment course, and shipping costs. After payment is processed, our distribution partner will process any claims that you may have with your health insurance carrier and will refund any insurance proceeds to you. Companies are urged to check with their health insurance carrier to verify coverage.
Prospective companies are urged to access the interactive pricing model located on the PandemicPrep.Org website.
Option Two (Bulk)
This option is available if you have access to a company physician or health service that can accept delivery of medications.
You will provide our distribution partner with the total number of treatment courses you wish to reserve. You will incur a $2.00 fee per enrollee to cover administrative costs. Upon distribution, you will be charged the wholesale acquisition cost, plus $7.00 per treatment course, and shipping costs to your company physician.
Your company physician or health service will be responsible for obtaining prescriptions and distributing the antiviral medication. It is not anticipated that companies would have any claim with their health insurance carrier under this distribution model.
